What is acne?
First, remember that acne starts in the oil gland which becomes plugged when certain bacteria form a biofilm at its opening. The same bacteria penetrate inside the plugged oil glands and digest the trapped oil. This digested oil is not recognized as “Self” by the immune system and therefore it is rejected, through pimples, bumps, nodules, cysts, etc. Our acne treatment is directed at removing the plugs, killing the bacteria that form the plugs and digest the trapped oil, reducing the inflammation and (by using certain lasers) shrinking the oil glands.
Non-facial acne such as breakouts on the chest and back area may or may not coexist with typical facial breakouts:
• The pathogenesis of non-facial breakouts is similar to facial breakouts.
• However, in non-facial breakouts, the obstruction of the pores is usually more severe.
• Also, non-facial breakouts often times appears more reddish and has a higher affinity to form scars.
